Usability Problem: Ensure mobile reply tool is in visual editor mode by default.
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

This task involves the work with updating the prototype we are using as part of the usability testing happening in T307840 [i] so that people who open the Reply and New Topic Tool enter both tools' visual mode by default.

Desired behavior

People who open the Reply or New Topic Tool on the Usability Improvements prototype [i] land in either tool's visual mode by default.

Event Timeline

On desktop, DiscussionTools defaults to the same mode as normal article editing (as far as I remember). Isn’t this the case on mobile? It may be surprising for usability testers that they get the wikitext editor, but I think real users would be even more surprised if they got different editors by default in the article than on its talk page, since presumably most junior editors use the talk pages before or after attempting to edit the article (which is not the case for usability testers). If most wikis default to the wikitext editor on mobile, maybe that should be changed (together with DiscussionTools), and not DT alone.

As I said on T308024, I think we should revive the task to make VE default on mobile everywhere.
