Jupyerlab is currently on version 3.2.4, updating to 3.4.0 fails with the same error shown in:
https://github.com/jupyterlab/jupyterlab/issues/12539

Which merged today (2022-05-17) so this will likely be in the v3.4.3 release.

Jupyterlab 3.4.5 now out.
