[Session] Scribe: Open-source Language Keyboards Based on Wikidata Lexicographical Data
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Scribe creates mobile keyboard apps for language learners that are based on Wikidata Lexicographical data. During the Hackathon I'm going to be working on the conversion of Scribe-iOS to Scribe-Android.

This session will introduce the project, give a demo of Scribe-iOS, talk about how we use Wikidata data, and show the current status of Scribe-Android!

Date & time: 2022-05-20 5:00 UTC and 2022-05-21 18:00 UTC
Track: Wikibase and Wikidata Room
Username for contact: AndrewTavis
Session Duration: 50 minutes
Language of session: English, with the demo being of Scribe's German keyboard
Prerequisites: None!
Good for newcomers: Very much so!

The slides for the presentation can be found here.

Event Timeline

Another session will be held in the second core working hour slot on one of the coming days :)

Any pointers for what is the best type of lexicographical or natural language data I could try to improve in Wikidata to support this type of use case? Adding translations to wikidata items? Doing things like lexemes challenge? https://dicare.toolforge.org/lexemes/challenge.php

Adding translations would definitely help, but then we're going to need to get a lot more in there to switch the translation feature for Scribe that's currently based on machine translations over to one that's fully Wikidata based (although that is definitely the goal). Maybe we could connect with the greater Wikidata team and talk about focussing on translations at some point, as there really is little support at the moment.

Lexemes challenge would be a good place to start, and I make sense edits using https://orthohin.toolforge.org/, but then Scribe is as of now not using the senses (it will later when we add other features).

Specifically looking at the languages you speak via your Wikimedia profile, as you're strong in French, consider adding conjugations of French verbs :D Currently there's no tool to add French verb conjugations like there are for other word forms in other languages (see https://lexeme-forms.toolforge.org/). This WDQS query is the one that Scribe uses for French verbs (put ?lexeme in the SELECT statement to also query the Wikidata pages). What that shows you is that Wikidata currently basically just has infinitives of French verbs. Any that you could add would be much appreciated!

Not sure if this is the most effective direction, but it might help if we set up the aforementioned https://lexeme-forms.toolforge.org/ to add also French verbs and then do a push to update the lexeme entries that are already on Wikidata.

The second talk was also held, so resolving this :)
