Decide on initial edit check to implement
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

✏️ This ticket is in the "sketch" stage. Meaning, please assume what's written below will likely change and evolve once the Editing Team prioritizes work on this task.

This task represents the work involved with deciding on the initial check (or checks) that the Editing Team will implement within the visual editor.

Requirements

Once complete, this section will contain the requirements any potential check will need to me.

  • Potential for impact:
    • Newcomers need to be likely to encounter and benefit from the guidance/feedback the check will introduce. See T313566.
  • Universality: check needs to appeal to all Wikipedias, across size and languages
  • Reliability: check needs to have minimal false positives and negatives so that volunteers can develop trust in it
  • Technical feasibility: we need to be able to implement the actual check
  • Configurability: check needs to be flexible enough for volunteers at individual projects to adapt the check to ensure it meets their needs
    • Ideally, content moderators/patrollers will benefit from a reduction in the percentage of edits newcomers make that they need to patrol.
  • Extensibility: we might also consider the potential for other teams/tools to benefit from a given check. E.g. A check related to reliable sources could benefit the Language Team and people using the Content Translation Tool.

Open questions

  • 1. There are exceptions to many policies and guidelines. With this in mind, how might the interface help people to understand that everything, including the policies people are potentially going to be informed about, are subjective to exceptions? This questions prompted by the comment @Spicy published at en.wiki about how there are cases where Twitter, Facebook, etc. are considered reliable sources per WP:ABOUTSELF.
