Investigation: Why does language fallback not work on Wikidata's mobile termbox
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Steps to reproduce:

  • Open Entity page on mobile that has only Labels in languages that are on your fallback chain

Examples:"

What happens?

  • The title shows "No label defined" (no fallback to Labels on the fallback chain).

What should have happened instead?

  • The title should show the string of a Label on the fallback chain (in the example from the mul label).

I am not sure if we ever had this, so this could also turn out to be a feature request. xD

Task breakdown note: We think this needs some discussion with UX. Two questions we have at the moment:

  1. We currently show a language name above the “title” label and description – what happens to this when the label and description fell back to a different language? (Possibly to different languages between the label and the description, too.)

  1. Unlike in the desktop termbox, the mobile termbox doesn’t have a row in the table for the current UI language – instead, the UI language is edited in the “title” section. What happens to those text inputs if the label and description fell back to other languages?

We also feel that this is closer to a feature request than a bug report.

One more point to discuss with UX:

  1. What position should mul get in the list once we activate it for all users (see T312176)?

We also feel that this is closer to a feature request than a bug report.

If this functionality was never available, it is definitely a new feature. I take from this that the current design of the new termbox is fundamentally incompatible with language fallback. Some work with UX might be needed for it to fully embrace language fallback.
