Add a character counter to Special:EnrollAsMentor
Open, LowPublic

Description

When a mentor signs up via Special:EnrollAsMentor (needs structured mentor list enabled, currently only the case at beta enwiki, see T312102 for the test running there), they have the opportunity to enter an introduction message. This message must be shorter than 240 characters, but there is no character counter or other easy-to-notice way the limit is exceeded.

Presently there is a minor issue with entering more characters into the Introduction message text field on https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Special:EnrollAsMentor. If a user enters more than 240 characters (which is the limitation for the Message to your mentees on Special :MentorDashboard, then the counter will display negative numbers:

Steps:

  1. A user types an intro message on Special:EnrollAsMentor - no warning of the message length is displayed.
  2. Then, a user goes to Special :MentorDashboard and wants to correct the intro message and sees the negative counter.

Good point! I just want to note that I think this issue will be solved by T312576: Structured mentor list should validate the maximum length of a mentor message, which should make it impossible for users to enter messages >240 chars in the sign up form.
