Evolve how section edit links are presented to be more visually consistent with rest of Topic Container
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

This task involves the work with revising how the [ edit ] or sometimes [edit | edit source ] links appear next to == H2 == section headings on talk pages where Topic Containers are available so that they appear more visually consistent with other elements contained within them.

Where "other elements" in this context refers to actions/information like: Subscribe buttons, Reply links, Latest comment and other pieces of metadata, etc.

Issue

While working on T312674, @nayoub noticed the variety of "visual languages" being used within discussion sections which could cause people new to using talk pages to feel overwhelmed by them and have a difficult time locating the actions they are most likely looking for (e.g. subscribing to a discussion and responding to a specific comment).

Mockups

In this option, the [ edit ] and [edit | edit source ] links are consistent with the visual treatment of the "reply" links.
Their position remains unchanged to avoid any confusion (e.g. it could appear that we are editing the metadata if it's placed below the lead title).

Event Timeline

@nayoub, can we keep the link texts lower case? If they get capitalized, all 849 translations (479 “edit” + 370 “edit source”) need to be redone—and maintained going forward, ensuring that the same word is used in content and talk namespaces. If possible, I’d save this work for volunteer translators.

Great spot @Tacsipacsi thank you for sharing! We won't be working on this right now but it's great to know for the future.
