Peachey88 renamed this task from Team Mailing List to Create Dagbani Wikimedians Usergroup mailing list.Sep 15 2022, 8:22 AM

This appears to already exist, per T274582: Request for creation: Dagbani Wikimedians Mailing List and https://lists.wikimedia.org/postorius/lists/dagbani.lists.wikimedia.org/

Have you lost access since the MailMan 3 migration and need to gain admin access again?

The already created public list above was for the entirety of the community. This new ticket is requesting a closed group for the management of the usergroup. I hope that clarifies things.

It does now that the description was updated :)

I don't think there is a definition what "private" means without going into detail. It can mean "users can only subscribe with approval", it can mean "archives are hidden", it can mean "its existence is hidden" and other things or combinations there of.

In general the approach is to decentralize this. You get a mailing list, you become admin, and then you change the settings to your specific needs.

So basically this should be identical to "give me a second list" and then you do with that what you like.

That makes sense. We’ll change the settings according to our needs.

To clarify what we'll be doing, users can only subscribe with approval, and the archives are going to be hidden.

@Masssly Hello, I tried to create this list for you and to follow the docs at https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailman#Create_a_mailing_list

But unfortunately it told me: Error: Illegal list name: dagbani-kpamba

Is it the "-", something else or maybe a bug? I used the shell wrapper, not web UI @Ladsgroup

cc: @BCornwall (clinic duty)

Oh, per that please ignore my previous comment. duh :)

Well, I will give it a different name and add -private I guess.

The already created public list above was for the entirety of the community. This new ticket is requesting a closed group for the management of the usergroup. I hope that clarifies things.

It does. Based on that I tried to use the name "dagbani-kpamba-mgmt" (I don't really like -private, it's so vague, better something that described what it is for, in this case management).

But for some reason I still got:

Error: Illegal list name: dagbani-kpamba-mgmt

@BCornwall Do you wanna try to create it and see if you can repro? There is also the web interface option.

I doubt whether the issue is the "-" because similar lists with "-" like wikidata-tech@lists.wikimedia.org exist. If for some reason Dagbani-"kpamba" is the issue then I'd prefer Dagbani-Team as an alternative.

@Masssly Please check your email inbox now:) It was that it wanted the full list name "dagbani-kpamba-mgmt@lists.wikimedia.org".

edit: I hope you are ok with "-mgmt". Let me know.

I could only specify a single "original admin". Please add the secondary admins using those intial powers.

"kpamba" means “management” in Dagbani so it sounds a bit odd to have both terms in the name :)
If it's not a lot of work, can we remove the -mgmt part so it reads only as "dagbani-kpamba@lists.wikimedia.org" ?

@3245 As the primary admin, can you please check your email and proceed with the rest of the settings?

Oh, thanks for that. I learned something today.

You got it. You should have another email. It was just because I originally thought the issue is that this name already exists.

Thank you very much, Dzahn \o/

Dzahn claimed this task.

You are welcome!

for completeness
