Commons Upload Wizard can't handle Flickr file with long names
Open, Needs TriagePublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

What happens?:

After the software tries to upload the file, there is a red exclamation sign and it says: "Filenames may not be longer than 240 bytes.", without letting you to continue to the next stage.

What should have happened instead?:

On other cases the file gets uploaded to the wizard and there is a green V, and one can continue to the next stage in which it is possible to deal and change the file's name, description, copyrights status, categories etc.. This happens even if there are other kinds of problems in the original Flickr name (the name is too short/there is another file on Commons with the same name/the name contains illegal characters...) - it won't let you to upload the file to Commons before these problems are solved, but at least it let you fix it, unlike the long name case.

Software version (skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):

  • I have encountered this problem for the first time at least 2 years ago, and I didn't get a proper response on the Commons help pages (else than manually downloading the file to my computer or use some sort of an old and inefficient version of the upload process)

*I have found a similar report on a Commons talk page from August 2017: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Upload_Wizard/Archive_1#Too_long_file_names where they mentioned a very similar case dealt on Phabricator which was supposedly resolved: T151776: filename-toolong error while uploading from Flickr
