Pick a name for the IDM
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

The software running the IDM will be written in a generic manner (e.g. if there’s a list of required attributes those will be read from a configuration file) to allow others to use it as well outside of the Wikimedia Foundation.

As such, we need to pick a name for the software itself (IDM is too generic and won’t be found by search engines)

The actual IDM will probably be served by a user-facing URL like https://idm.wikimedia.org, but the name will be present in various parts of the codebase, so it should be selected early.

A tentative initial name is Charon, but we're happy to solicit further feedback via this task or the talk page of https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_IDM

FYI It seems that's taken already in PyPI and there are similar ones in Debian

Agreed with @Volans re: name availability. If Charon is intended as the Greek myth then an alternative from Egypt would be Aqen (there's a couple other names linked from the page). Hope that helps! (slowing turning away from looking at the bike shed at a distance)

This is a noble idea, but very likely also will not work out in the long term. I'm not at all against the project having a codename or attempting to be flexible in its configuration, but if our use cases were commonly aligned with other projects then we would more likely be selecting and configuring an existing IdM product rather than writing our own in the first place.

Janus because of the 2 faces and it's what you get when you search for "Greek god of identity" and this is managing identities.

Great suggestion, but also in use already: https://janus.conf.meetecho.com/ (and in Debian as src:janus)

Louhi, the shape-changing witch-queen from the Kalevala? I don't think currently in use as software-name...

Charon is also the StrongSwan IKEv2 daemon: https://docs.strongswan.org/docs/5.9/daemons/charon.html

That's kind of cool.
