Deploy Kaktovik Numerals web font
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Feature summary: I can share a web font for the new Kaktovik Numerals block

Benefits: It may be some time before fonts are available on most devices. Meanwhile these numerals are used in schools and it would be good for them to be visible on Wikimedia.

I can share the (cc) font used in the Unicode request for these digits, which were accepted and published last month as part of Unicode 15. The glyphs were traced from a print source published in 1997 ([http://www.ankn.uaf.edu/sop/SOPv2i1.pdf p.13]).

Hi @Kwamikagami, thanks for taking the time to report this and welcome to Wikimedia Phabricator!

Assuming the web font is under a free license, please feel free to provide links to its download and license.

Hi @Aklapper
Here's the link:
Kaktovik Numerals.ttf [available below]

As for the copyright, these were scanned from a print copy in Bartley, Wm. Clark (January–February 1997). "Making the Old Way Count". Sharing Our Pathways. 2 (1): 12–13. PDF here.
I've uploaded the same scans to Commons (e.g. File:Kaktovik digit 2.svg) as inelligible for copyright. Whatever minimal work I put in in cleaning up the scans shouldn't be eligible for copyright either, and if the font is, I release it under whichever CC you prefer.

Thanks! Also uploading the TTF file here:

Is this something that could be added to WM as a web font, so that people from the community (e.g. the North Slope Borough school district) could read the WP and WK articles without a font installed? We're working on getting a font and keyboard that will work on people's phones, but evidently installing new fonts on phones is not straightforward, so it will probably be a while before many people have adequate support.

If you or anyone would like to prepare a patch in Gerrit, please see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:UniversalLanguageSelector#Adding_fonts - thanks!

I can add OFL or whatever to the (c) section of the font info and re-upload the .ttf if that is needed. Just let me know how to word it.

That's not needed; see the link in my previous comment.

Thanks. I tried doing it myself, but I'm finding the instructions very confusing, so better if someone who knows what they're doing tried it. BTW, this Unicode block is being used in literacy and language-revitalization projects and has been in the news, and the WP-en page occasionally gets up to 25k hits a day, so I think this would be nice to support.

@Aklapper Looks like this has been taken care of. The Unicode characters now display in multiple WP's and WK's. So I think this thread can be closed -- don't want to do it myself, though, in case I misunderstood something.

@Aklapper I just Unicodified the article on WP-ar, and got a message from another user that they now only see little boxes. The characters display correctly for me, which they hadn't a few days ago. Could you check if the web font is now working? I don't know if this is a local change for me (though I don't know how it could be), or if that user maybe just has old software that does not support the Kaktovik range. Thanks!

Looks like this has been taken care of

I don't think so. If you have any reference to a code change please share it

No code change, the characters simply started to display properly on my system and I assumed. But others tell me they still see boxes. No idea why I should see the characters now -- I haven't installed any new fonts and I don't need to be logged in to see them.

Please provide a link to a Wikimedia page where this is the case.

It is likely you had a system update, and the font was added to your system. It is likely that this will depend on what operating system you are using. That or you installed the font locally.

Yes, but I had installed the font locally last year and it did not allow me to read WP pages that use the Kaktovik characters. Then one day I could. Could've been a browser update, but there is no Unicode font available other than the one I uploaded, so I have no idea what might've changed.

Going to https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Кактовикские_цифры#Кодировка I do not see Unicode letters displayed here. So nothing changed server-side.
