Provide a separate talk page for mentors, for questions coming from their assigned newcomers
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Several community members have requested a separate talk page to receive questions coming from their assigned newcomers.

The reasons given are:

  • questions from newcomers can be diluted on a very frequented talk page
  • newcomers can help each other (while it is poorly looked to "help" someone experienced while you are a newcomer)
  • some user talk pages are blocked, because of vandals or harassers. A separate talk page allows the mentor to continue replying to their mentees while the main page is blocked (this reason has been considered and it has been decided to do with T244258: Homepage: Treat mentors with protected talk pages as unavailable, to avoid harassement to be moved to another page)

Creating a specific page could be done through a sub-page talk page. However, when someone posts at a sub-talk page, then the page owner don't get any notification, just a line at their watchlist.

Provide a separate talk page for mentors, for questions coming from their assigned newcomers means:

  • mentors add a link to their mentor dashboard settings to define where this page is (verification is made to be sure that this page is under the mentor's sub pages)
  • this page overrides the default place where questions are posted
  • the link to this page is indicated on Special:ManageMentors, so that other mentors and admins can oversee and watch the talk page)
  • the selected talk page is treated as the regular talk page (without replacing it) regarding notifications sent by Echo

I don't think any benefit from this would be proportional with the effort required. (The rest is fairly easy to implement.) We could prepend a ping to the message, maybe.

Personally speaking, "no notifications" is sometimes benefitial, as notifications are probably the most annoying thing on talk page vandalism. Sending notificatons when talk pages is sent could very well harm the reason why we'd like to have a second talk page.

Treating the second talk page with no notifications regarding new messages already exists: it is a talk page sub-page. And if this page is not watched, any activity there will just be invisible.
