Currently our app declares itself as a handler of http:// and https:// links that point to *.wikipedia.org domains.

It would also be useful, however, for us to create our own scheme, such as wikipedia://, so that we could construct and exchange links for more explicit use by the app, in cases where implicit https handling might fail, or might be impractical.
