I saw, that the related PR introduced a major change having MW < 1.39 also be installed on PHP 8. I don't think this is good, since mw.org states: "MediaWiki support for PHP 8.0 and above started with 1.39.0. Other release branches like MediaWiki 1.35.x may have minor issues and warnings on PHP 8 but generally work. See T248925 for more information." [1] There's probably a large number of extensions, that do not yet fully support PHP 8 like SMW.
In my opinion it would be better to change the structure so that the PHP version can be set per MW version.

We were asked to move to PHP 8 in https://github.com/docker-library/official-images/pull/13622#issuecomment-1332695940 - I think staying on 7.4 isn't an option anymore. If extensions don't support PHP 8 yet...they really need to.
