Update for logo for sr.wikipedia.org (to resolve simultaneously with T330631)
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

I ask for update for Serbian Wikipedia logo (Main Page threepartite one, and mobile, small-capsed text "ВИКИПЕДИЈА" of three parts with globe and provision text "Слободна енциклопедија"). Problem is that some letters (Д & Ј) are not aligned properly. Proposed replacement logo is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-wordmark-sr.svg (same as https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_wordmark-bs_Cyrl_GREY.svg). It is instead of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_wordmark_sr.svg (that is admin-level protected Commons file).

Related community discussion is at https://sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%B8%D1%98%D0%B0:%D0%A2%D1%80%D0%B3/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BE%D1%9B#логоДЈ (Википедија:Трг/Помоћ).

NOTE: Some users would retain current color difference, for mobile version it is displayed other file (not prev. version of I-updated https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-wordmark-sr.svg, https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d4/Wikipedia-wordmark-sr.svg, but it's prev. version, https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/d/d4/20221206095823%21Wikipedia-wordmark-sr.svg) — regarding desktop narrow version. Regarding mobile version, Serbian Wikipedia uses for some reason grey (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_wordmark_sr.svg) and yet you can choose between grey and black after I worked at solving this problem (grey is at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_wordmark-bs_Cyrl_GREY.svg, black is at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-wordmark-sr.svg / https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d4/Wikipedia-wordmark-sr.svg) //filename is "spent" so it is with other codes but source file can be modified in Notepad e.g. to get rid of bs code or other inconsistencies; I suggest soon upload because bigger problem is lowered Д & Ј).

Grey version with only Ј at text line and Д below is at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_wordmark_sr-new.svg.

Ioacc1234red renamed this task from Update for logo for sr.wikipedia.org to Update for logo for sr.wikipedia.org (to resolve simultaneously with T330631).Feb 27 2023, 8:36 AM

Clarification after community talk got archived (https://sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%B8%D1%98%D0%B0:%D0%A2%D1%80%D0%B3/%D0%90%D1%80%D1%85%D0%B8%D0%B2%D0%B0/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BE%D1%9B/23#%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%BE%D0%94%D0%88) and images updated, and T330631 got opened:

Here is link for newly opened discussion as community consensus is still needed (Ovde je link za novootvorenu diskusiju jer je konsenzus zajednice i dalje potreban): https://sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%B4%D0%B8%D1%98%D0%B0:%D0%A2%D1%80%D0%B3/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BE%D1%9B#%D0%9F%D1%80%D0%B5%D1%81%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B2%D1%99%D0%B0%D0%B2%D0%B0%D1%9A%D0%B5_%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%BE%D0%B0_%D0%B8_%D1%81%D0%B0%D0%B4%D1%80%D0%B6%D0%B0%D1%98%D0%B0

Thanks for your reply. You don't need to create a separate task for language convention on wordmark/tagline.

I could have a patch for you, but I'm still a little confused - the legacy vector has a logo without a "down J" (lower baseline for the letter "J", see https://sr.wikipedia.org/static/images/project-logos/srwiki-2x.png), and the vector-2022 one has a "down J" (https://sr.wikipedia.org/static/images/mobile/copyright/wikipedia-wordmark-sr.svg). So you want both of them to have a "down J", is this your point?

@Stang: Updated Linux Libertine font types out smallcaps J lowered (that's for Latin-script text; for Cyrillic-script text does not feature smallcaps, letters stay lowercase when Character > Small Caps is chosen in Adobe Illustrator) — so no, I do not want "down J", I decided to leave it as it is. There was discussion at sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Википедија:Трг/Помоћ (sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Википедија:Трг/Архива/Помоћ/23#логоДЈ; link above) about raising letter "J" (and letter "D") but (only) user that was part of discussion (Боки) was against it and I am so now (to explain further: actually I started then, in December 2022, discussion to move "J" in the text line so that it is not lowered but then conversion to Lat. script of logo and Contents was not discussed—I copied description of as-duplicate-closed T330631 to have completely-centralized discussion at this task page). Note that:

  • there are few editors there at sr.wikipedia.org that take part in the discussions on this topic (after three months there was no one except Боки and they've non-caringly archived section-topic with Phab task designated as OPENED (ОТВОРЕНО), same as there was not more of discussion today – there was no one from in-the-morning started topic at sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Википедија:Трг/Помоћ#Пресловљавање_логоа_и_садржаја (link above) until now, 12 hours have passed, to reply); and that:
  • currently displayed version (has been displayed for long time) has both "J" (smallcaps "Ј") and "D" (smallcaps "Д") lowered so there is no change in design, and Боки noted that – as I understand his "too basic" words – lowered "J" adds dynamic element to the design; – but more important is conversion part now (that Lat. displays Latin script version).

But complete update is needed for consistency.

After checking Wayback: The "legacy vector" logo as you said, is actually with "down J" – 2004–2015, and the one without "down J" had been used 2015–2021, after what display-model changed when narrower display with widening option in bottom right part of the page was enabled and after that untill now – 2021–2023 logo is with "down J" /13 years with "down J" and 6 years without "down J"/. I do not know what pages need update but it should be clear that number of new logos to be implemented is 14, by using 6 different image files:

  1. six for dropdown-menu option Ћир./lat.:
  2. four for dropdown-menu option Ћир.:
  3. four for dropdown-menu option Lat.:

Description from T330631 (entitled Enable logo and Contents conversion to Latin script for sr.wikipedia.org (to resolve simultaneously with T324545)) that was opened but designated duplicate and merged into this task:

When viewing "Lat." page at sr.wikipedia.org (that uses drop-down menu for scripts variants of Serbian language: Ћир./lat. – page as is, Ћир. – system conversion to Cyrillic & Lat. – conversion of everything to Latin script) there's logo remaining same (Cyrillic) and Contents remaining same (Cyrillic or Latin).
I propose implementation of logos as resolved in T324545; complete latinization of Contents in needed and cyrillication for rootly Latin text-model article pages (el/lat/latn; can be checked by comparing title of the page with latinized version of that and if same article would be rootly Latin, though it is still problematic finding this out for Contents to go Cyrillic, at least in my opinion). This is proper conversion model: https://sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9C%D0%BE%D0%B4%D1%83%D0%BB:TitleReplace.

Thanks for your reply.

  • Is it needed to update the "legacy logo" as well to align your changes to wordmark/tagline? I found an SVG file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-slaven-sr.svg which may meet your requirement, but you can also upload your own if needed.
  • You don't need to create a separate wordmark/tagline for mobile view - it will inherit the desktop version.
Ioacc1234red changed the task status from Open to In Progress.EditedFeb 28 2023, 4:44 AM

@Stang:

I've updated, at Commons, main black and grey wordmarks in Cyrl for more accuracy — after working myself, then based on your proposition: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-slaven-sr.svg (which also got updated, mainly because dot was missing at letter "ј"). I've updated tagline file per https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-slaven-sr.svg and created https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-slaven-sr_Latn.svg too.

I think work on patch for logos can begin because Latin script is very important there. And Contents transliteration fix must not be forgotten.

There are now available versions with smallcaps "J" not lowered below lower baseline of text (I suggest using grey versions of them – 3rd and 4th bullet items, for mobile, because there is tinier view and Боки's 'dynamicity' could have effect of misleading while scrolling — still, lower, black wordmark, can be still https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_wordmark-bs_Cyrl.svg & https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikipedia_wordmark-bs_Latn.svg in order to resemble main desktop long-time version with Ј lowered below text baseline, what lasted more than two thirds of time logo has been displayed so it is symbolic and like memory association; similarly, it could become memory association that first logo is grey and with Ј/J in text baseline, both together reflecting simplicity, while there is original logo, always awailable, to associate to main, desktop version):

Additionally, please check what happened with alignment of sr.wiktionary.org logo when compared with en.wiktionary.org, after T172245 was done in Aug 2017 icons matched perfectly in desktop version but now at sr they are placed a bit more right and more down.

Change 892955 had a related patch set uploaded (by Stang; author: Stang):

[operations/mediawiki-config@master] srwiki: Update logo/wordmark/tagline, add latin variant version

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/892955

There are now following files too:

Those are for desktop (third bullet) and mobile (first and second bullet) Wikibooks in Serbian Cyrillic and Latin (for Ћир./lat., Ћир. and Lat.); I am just about to upload same way as for these also for Serbian Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikinews and Wiktionary (black and grey versions when needed).

There are now following files for mobile Serbian Wikiquote (first two bullets) and desktop Serbian Wikiquote for Latin version that was missing (third bullet):

If black color is needed for lower logo, near bottom of the mobile page, there are versions available:

Wikisource, Wikinews and Wiktionary follow...

There are now following files for mobile Serbian Wikisource (first two bullets) and desktop Serbian Wikisource for Latin version that was missing (third bullet):

If black color is needed for lower logo, near bottom of the mobile page, there are versions available:

Note that desktop version is misaligned and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikisource-logo-sr_Cyrl.svg should be used intead of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikisource-logo-sr2.svg for that as former is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikisource-logo-fr-en.svg updated-to.

Wikinews and Wiktionary follow...

@Ioacc1234red: Please stop edit warring in older Phabricator tasks. Thanks for your understanding.

There are now following files for mobile Serbian Wikinews (first two bullets) and desktop Serbian Wikinews for Latin version that was missing (third bullet):

If black color is needed for lower logo, near bottom of the mobile page, there are versions available:

Note that desktop version is of improper text size and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiNews-Logo-sr_Cyrl.svg should be used intead of current image file (unknown where it is, cannot be opened because it is forced URL link) for that as former is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiNews-Logo-en.svg updated-to (vertical alignment during implementing to Main Page should be fixed to match https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiNews-Logo-en.svg, upper globe part is a bit raised in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiNews-Logo-sr_Cyrl.svg / https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiNews-Logo-sr_Latn.svg).

Wiktionary follows...

There are now following files for mobile Serbian Wiktionary (first two bullets) and desktop Serbian Wiktionary for Latin version that was missing (third bullet):

If black color is needed for lower logo, near bottom of the mobile page, there are versions available:

Note that desktop version is of improper alignment and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WiktionarySr_-_DP_Derivative.svg needs to be applied (vertical alignment during implementing to Main Page should be fixed to match https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WiktionaryEn_-_DP_Derivative.svg, Serbian desktop comparison gives impression that Serbian logo is a bit lowered and more to the right side; both https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WiktionarySr_-_DP_Derivative.svg & https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WiktionarySr_-_DP_Derivative_Latn.svg are applicable).

I've completed my part. Patches and stuff can start now... Remember that this task is for resolving appearance of Cyrillic logos when dropdown-menu option is Lat. and appearance of Cyrillic Contents when dropdown-menu option is Lat. (two chief points to note-out). If this is done, there would be neither one problem with displaying content on Serbian Wikipedia — all page elements: translated.

For srwikisource and srwiktionary: we require the height of the site logo be less than 155px when it has a 135px width. Please resize if possible.
For srwikinews: Current logo is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikiNews-Logo-sr.svg per T172255. As the word is changed significantly, please open a discussion on local community. I know there's few people at that site, but this is kind of a mandatory process.

@Stang FYI, I just locked this user, who is a sock of an already locked user (note that the discussion was locally opened by an anonymous user to avoid to be recognized and blocked). See also that Obsuser was subscribed to this task when it was created. Best :)

@Stang: For srwikisource and srwiktionary – done (files: Wikisource-logo-sr Cyrl2.svg / Wikisource-logo-sr Latn2.svg and WiktionarySr - DP Derivative2.svg / WiktionarySr - DP Derivative Latn2.svg); I tried to keep same alignment & size for upper main logo (non-text) part. For srwikinews – I did not change the word; check currently /2023-03-04 21:06:12 CET/ displayed version (they've changed it from the one you cited after T172255).

@FriedrickMILBarbarossa Do you agree with this change? The new sock also was locked!

WP:DENY. As for the proposed changes themselves, I talked about this matter with another Serbian administrator, but we neither really know nor understand what this editor is attempting to achieve.

Kizule added a subscriber: Kizule.

Third administrator here: Neither I don't understand what exactly is supposed to be achieved here. So, let's just close this as declined.

@Aklapper Be free to correct status of task if this should be actually closed as "invalid". Thank you!

Stang removed Stang as the assignee of this task.Mar 5 2023, 4:35 AM

I could abandon my patch, but frankly I have to say I don't see any issue for adding wordmark/tagline to these projects. With the progress of deploying vector-2022 skin to all sites, it has to be done in some day.

Oh, we don't have it really?

I mean projects except srwiki.

Oh, wordmarks and tagline part makes sense.

I don't want to devalue your efforts, so I'd like to wait a bit, having in mind that request is made by globally locked user, which clearly told that he won't stop with creating accounts (see https://bs.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:%C4%8Car%C5%A1ija/Pomo%C4%87&diff=prev&oldid=3489837).

Let's not abandon patch, but wait until actual community decides, not single user (that's actually why is he blocked in first place, because he kept doing things on his own, instead of consulting with others on making breaking changes).

Closed as no community consensus developed for a long time. Feel free to reopen if interested in this or needed again.
