Background
In the past years, Japanese Wikipedia comunity dissatisfaction over integration of machine translation in Content Translation tool have grown to a level that ultimately caused the machine translation being requested to be disabled for Japanese Wikipedia. A WMF member tried to provide an alternative solution by changing the machine translation originality threshold such that an article cannot be more than 75% same as before translating, however such act further fueled anger of Japanese community according to discussion record. (Discussion: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Topic:X5np6qyldklnm166 )
Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):
- Manually translate this article https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Meryibre_Khety&oldid=1097107499 into Japanese through CX2 tool
What happens?:
- The manually translated result, https://ja.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%E3%82%B1%E3%83%86%E3%82%A31%E4%B8%96&oldid=92411264 except the last paragraph , was deemed to be too similar to machine translation that editor have to cheat the system by inserting a paragraph of irrelevant text to post their translation.
What should have happened instead?:
- Manual translation should not be deemed as machine translation.
Software version (skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):
Machine translation enabled with threshold of 75%
Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):
- Resolving this bug DOES NOT mean Japanese Wikipedia would accept machine translation in content translation tool again. Also I DO NOT represent Japanese Wikipedia community, and I AM NOT the author of the translation provided nor have I been authorized by original author in any other ways to use the content beyond standard cc license when content are published on Wikipedia.
