SectionTranslation uses random title & does't connect the page automatically
Closed, ResolvedPublicBUG REPORT

Description

When you translate a page using SectionTranslation, it uses random title.

I recently translated "North of Nome (1925 film)", when i was translating the article, google translate suggested me "নর্থ অফ নম (1925 ফিল্ম)", then i corrected the title to "নর্থ অফ নোম (১৯২৫-এর চলচ্চিত্র)". But when i published the article, it was published here. This is completely random title, i didn't enter that title. Other user also experiencing same problem. E.g. user:Yahya translated "Dubai Sports", when he published the article, it was published under the title "Fritzl case"! (later he renamed the article manually)

Second problem is when you publish the article using SectionTranslation, it doesn't automatically connect the article with wikidata. Previously it did.

Both problem started recently. Note that both problem does not occur if you use ContentTranslation desktop mode.

Event Timeline

@Pginer-WMF Can you take a look? It happened again.

Thanks for reporting and pinging. We are looking into this, and will update in the ticket.

Change 878934 had a related patch set uploaded (by Nik Gkountas; author: Nik Gkountas):

[mediawiki/extensions/ContentTranslation@master] SX: Fix "getPage" getter to return null when title is empty

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/878934

I submitted the above patch that is expected to resolve both issues. More specifically, the wikidata linking issue is happening because of the same root cause: false target title. Thus by resolving the target title issue, the wikidata linking will also be resolved.

Test status: QA fail,

this still does not link automatically

To test this issue, I translated the lead section of the Wikimania article from English to Greek. At first, in the new article page, that I've been redirected to after successful publishing in Section Translation, the article didn't seem to be linked to the English Wikimania article. However, 1-2 minutes later the article appeared properly linked through Wikidata. By looking at the history of the "Wikimania" page in Wikidata, I checked that this link was created during the publishing, although it took few minutes. I'm also attaching a screenshot of this evidence. @EChukwukere-WMF could you test this task again based on my input? Maybe you'll have to wait a few minutes until the link has been created in Wikidata.

@ngkountas I updated and published a small change in the article "Chinedu Oriala" on a mobile device

I am still yet to see it in wikidata : https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q2963762&action=history

can you help advice on this or it takes a longer time than expected ?

@EChukwukere-WMF this task refers to new articles created using Section Translation. This is when we need the newly created page to be linked with the original source page through Wikidata. Per my understanding it takes a few minutes for the link to be created.

Test status: QA PASS

it updates quickly in wikidata
