Sticky header covers up section title after following a section link on the very same page
Closed, DuplicatePublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • With Vector 2022 on, go to a random page on en:wp, then jump to a section on another page, like this.
  • The section will load, and then the sticky header will load, covering the section title and edit link.

What should have happened instead?:

The section title should appear below where the sticky header will load (so, the page should load an appropriate distance above that line, if it has to load before the sticky header comes in). This is what happens if you click on a section link within the same page (as opposed to on a different page).

Mentioned in a comment on the VP.

Software version (skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):

Initially tested on MacOS / FF 109 and Chrome 108

Update I can no longer reproduce this in those browsers as of the next day.

Which browser(s) was this tested with?

I just updated to the latest version of Google Chrome and duplicated this on Windows 10.

Logged-out users do not have this problem as the section link jumps to the appropriate section heading which is visible at the top of the window.
You must be a logged-in user to duplicate this bug as only logged-in users get the "sticky header", if that's what you call it. I call it some sort of "magic toolbar" that floats down from the top of the window after the rest of the page has already loaded, floating right over the top of the section heading that just loaded at the top.

The "magic toolbar" has links to your user page, user contributions, etc. In Vector 2010, this was not some sort of magic floating thing. It's just the tabs at the top of the page which load with the rest of the page, and not as a separate, post-page-load operation.

Aklapper renamed this task from Sticky header covers up section title after following a section link to Sticky header covers up section title after following a section link on the very same page.Jan 23 2023, 3:06 PM

So where to go (URL), and what link text exactly to click? A clear testcase would be welcome...

Open casket is a redirect to [[Funeral#Visitation]].

Follow that link as a logged-in user and the first two lines I see are:

two evenings before the funeral. In the past, it was common practice to place the casket in the
decedent's home or that of a relative for viewing. This practice continues in many areas of Ireland and

I need to scroll my mouse back up the page to see:

Visitation
At the visitation (also called a "viewing", "wake" or "calling hours"), in Christian or secular Western
custom, the body of the deceased person (or decedent) is placed on display in the casket (also called
a coffin, however almost all body containers are caskets). The viewing often takes place on one or

which should be at the top of the window, but the section heading and the first three lines of the section have been steamrolled over by that floating magic "sticky" header thing which has links to the talk page, add to watchlist, 72 languages, etc.

I can upload screen shots if necessary, but this should be easy to duplicate and totally obvious.

Going to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Open_casket&redirect=no and clicking the link to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funeral#Visitation , I can neither reproduce this problem in Chromium 109 nor Firefox 109 being logged in. It always displays the "Visitation" heading right below the sticky header for me.

I can upload screen shots if necessary, but this should be easy to duplicate and totally obvious.

I'd never recommend to assume that any bugs are easy to reproduce... :-/

OK, so now we've just gone from easy to reproduce to damned near impossible to reproduce. Like hunting for a needle in a haystack or finding the winning lottery ticket number.

Because only Sj, myself and maybe one or two others have had this problem. What do our system configurations have in common?

But I did reproduce it on both my Windows 10 and Windows 7 machines.

FWIW, I don't see that "fullscreen toggle" when my browser zoom is set to 100%. But I can make it appear when I lower the zoom to 90%. I don't know whether there's a ticket for that.

Well I see that this section link works properly for me.
But this section link does not.
And neither does this section link which Sj provided in their original report above.

Still a mystery, but at least we have another clue.

Sj updated the task description. (Show Details)

I can no longer reproduce this effect via any of the links! Same OS, roughly the same browser version (though I didn't capture the specific subversions yesterday, there may have been an automatic update). I'll comment again if I see it in the future. @Wbm1058 glad you see it too, so I know I'm not mad.

Well now the Funeral#Visitation link works OK for me too.

And the "Vector 2022 Post-Deployment Update from WMF team" link works better... rather than entirely covering the section heading, the sticky header only drops down and covers about half of the header.

It occurs to me that this section-linking issue may be independent of Vector 2022. I've occasionally seen Vector 2010 section links not land in proper alignment either. It's just that in 2010 you could still read what was "above the line" because the 2022 sticky header didn't drop down and cover it up. Maybe look for a bug report entered years ago about a section-linking alignment issue that surely would have been put on the back burner like so many hundreds of other phabs, given how difficult it may be to track down. My observations are that the alignment issues come and go, and I have no idea why or what causes the phenomenon.

T317967 describes the same or a very similar phenomenon, which, as I said I've observed in legacy Vector from time to time as well.

And this bug report is a duplicate of T321221
