Ctrl-option-e not working in Firefox
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

  • Firefox v. 109.0.1
  • MediaWiki 1.35 + 1.40

I remember being able to hit Ctrl-option-e to either edit a wiki page or view its source. At some point - recently or not - this stopped working for me in Firefox. Nothing happens. Other shortcuts, like ctrl-option-v for loading VE or ctrl-option-h for history, are working fine.

I checked for shortcuts that may have been hijacked by browser addons, but nothing came up. I also did as suggested in #T2477, restart in safe-mode, open a private window, but that did not make a difference.

Cannot reproduce in Firefox 109 either. What are your settings under "Special:Preferences > Editing > Editing mode" ?

Settings on MediaWiki.org:

  • Selected: Show me both editing tabs
  • Enable the visual editor and the new wikitext mode in Structured Discussions (enabled)
  • Enable the editing toolbar (enabled)

i tried switching them on and off to see if it would make a difference, but it didn't.

Digging further, however, I found that it depends on my laptop’s language-specific keyboard settings. Mine were set to British English, but changing them to Irish English somehow solved it, although at the same time, it changed the keyboard layout in undesirable ways, e.g disabling "ctrl+option+h" (history). The same workaround didn't work with U.S. or Canadian English, by the way.

I also tried to find out if changing the browser language (again British English) had any effect, but this appears to be irrelevant, as are MediaWiki-specific user preferences.

What does for work atm is switching on capslock first, followed by ctr+option+e.
