[SPIKE] Finalize deployment strategy for default-on Usability Improvements (desktop)
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

This task involves the work with defining the strategy that will guide how we – the Editing Team in collaboration with volunteers – plan to make the suite of DiscussionTools Usability Improvements available by default on desktop.

🚧 Questions to be answered 🚧

  • 1. How will the Editing Team propose the component features that comprise the suite of DiscussionTools Usability Improvements be made available? E.g. All together? One-by-one, in a sequence? Something else?
  • 2. What criteria will the Editing Team propose we – volunteers + Editing Team – use to decide whether the suite of DiscussionTools Usability Improvements is fit for a default-on deployment on desktop?
  • 3. How will the Editing Team go about making volunteers aware of the plan this ticket will produce so that we can learn what – if anything – about it might need to be changed?

Requirements/Plan

🚧 Needs 🚧

Volunteers

  • Volunteers need sufficient time to evaluate each of the features that comprise the suite of DiscussionTools Usability Improvements so that they can identify potentially blocking issues they discover within them
  • Volunteers need to be made aware of the plan to offer the suite of DiscussionTools Usability Improvements as default-on features on desktop so that they can decide the extent to which they would like to participate in the process that will shape how and when the deployment happens

Editing Team + Volunteers

  • Before conversations about a potential deployment can begin, volunteers + Editing Team will need to agree on the criteria they will collectively use to decide whether the suite of DiscussionTools Usability Improvements is fit for a default-on deployment on desktop

Done

  • 1. Answers to each of the === Questions to be answered is documented
  • 2. A deployment plan/strategy is documented in the === Requirements/Plan section above
  • 3. A deployment plan that encompasses the "answers" named in "1." are published on-wiki. E.g. on a page like mw:Talk pages project/Usability/Deployment plan.

Notes from from 8 March Discussion with @Whatamidoing-WMF

  • 1. How will the Editing Team propose the component features that comprise the suite of DiscussionTools Usability Improvements be made available? E.g. All together? One-by-one, in a sequence? Something else?

Perhaps we could consider rolling out each feature (Topic Containers, Page Frame, Clear Affordances) in separate phases and scaling each feature gradually (e.g. Experienced editors --> newcomers --> people who are logged out).
