Blank page when translating post in Diff; impossible to add categories
Open, Needs TriagePublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

Diff will make a copy of the post, will all formatting and metadata, and set the language to the language you picked.
  • Also, I can't add any categories. (might be a separate bug?)

What happens?:

So far I've translated two blog post, and ideally, like the document said, I should be given the original text on the text area. Instead I got a blank page. I had to go back and forth to the original post to copy each paragraph. (I could've copied everything, but I wish I don't have to).

Also, I couldn't add any categories on my translation.

Here's one example:

image.png (410×1 px, 37 KB)

On the top is my translation, notice there's no category, while the original blog, on the bottom, have several categories.

What should have happened instead?:

  1. The page should load the original content, to ease the translator's task
  2. Able to add some categories.

I'm in the middle of translating a third blog. This time it's my own English blog (in draft mode), and I'm translating it to Indonesian. I'm documenting the problems I encounter:

  1. The original blog post is not copied (as per my ticket above). I had to copy paste (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V) the whole thing from the English blog to my translation blog. It went smoothly, including all the images etc. So probably the documentation info should be updated.
  2. I can add categories on my English blog, but I can't do so on my Indonesian translation. (as per my ticket above) I didn't see documentation about this. Not sure if it's a regular bug, a language specific bug or a feature.
  3. My tags from the original blog (I originally had 6 or 7 tags, didn't get copied to the translated blog. (new bug). It would be a little hassle to retype all of them. In my previous 2 translation blogs, I noticed that I inadvertently put different tags from the original blogs. Ideally, either the translated blog retain the original tags (then the translator could adjust the tags accordingly), or in the suggested tags, mention the tags from the original blog.

What should have happened instead?:

  1. List of tags are copied or shown from the original blog to the translation blog.

@Bennylin, I'm looking into this now. When you are translating a draft blog post, is the "duplicate" icon highlighted? https://diff.wikimedia.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/duplicate-icon.png

It should be by default, but I want to rule out a configuration error over something else first.

For the tags issues, that might also be remedied if we figure out why the site's not duplicating the post. tags should be duplicated as well!
