Description

Description

Currently the search input collapses at 1000px, and then the globe icon hides at 720px:

I think it's worth reconsidering this approach, and possibly switching it so that the globe icon hides at 1000px, and then the search input collapses at 720px. The general idea being that the expanded search input is a high-utility element in the site header.

@alexhollender_WMFthe current constraint comes from the language selector on projects like Wikidata.
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Main_Page
Here's that at 1000px for example:

Note: we currently have no way to collapse the language button and the length of the label text varies based on the language.
We could change the break point for projects without the language button but any variance in UI means more variants to support and potentially break.

LGoto moved this task from Incoming to Not ready to estimate on the Web-Team-Backlog board.

Talked about this in grooming today. This wouldn't impact tablet users, but we could make this decision based on data by looking at the desktop improvements click tracking schema and work out what % of clicks to the search button occur in this bracket. Analyst consultation might help decide whether to do this or decline it.
