Android Reading List Sharing - sharing method (MMS, email, etc.) selected as 'always use' , how to change setting?
Closed, ResolvedPublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to reproduce

  1. - In Android app (v. 2.7.50433) when using 'Share Reading List' feature user selects method to share Reading List
  2. - When sharing a different Reading List later the first sharing method is selected by default
  3. - There is no clear way to select a different sharing method within the Sharing action loop
  4. - Sharing method setting remains even after app uninstall/re-install

Possible solutions

  • Provide a way for users to change Sharing method or select Sharing method each time
  • make explicit selection of 'Always Use' less easy to select
  • provide documentation for users on how to switch selection methods

Environments observed

App version: 2.7.50433
Android OS versions: multiple versions

Event Timeline

To be clear, this is not an issue in the app, but rather in the way the system App Picker lets you select the "default" app to use for a particular action, including sharing reading lists. It gives you an option to select a destination app "Just once" or "Always". The problem is that it makes it too easy to select "Always" by accident, and it's quite difficult and unintuitive to undo that selection.

Here is how to undo the "Always" selection:

Based on the above screenshot, let's suppose I selected Gmail as my "always" app.
So then, go to your Home screen and long-press on the target app that you selected earlier (in this case Gmail):

From the menu that pops up, select "App info", or the "i" icon. This brings you to the "info" screen for that app.
If you scroll down a bit you should see an item that says "Set as default":

When you tap "Set as default", it takes you to this screen where you see a button to "Clear defaults":

Tap the "Clear defaults" button to reset the "always" behavior for that app. After this is done, the system app picker will go back to showing a list of apps for you to choose from, instead of defaulting to this app every time.
