Positive Reinforcement: Personalized praise design improvements for Flagged revisions
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Problem

Newcomers often get discouraged because they get limited feedback, and the feedback they do receive is generally critical or about someone reverting their edit.

Background

In a Community consultation about Personalized Praise ideas, a community member mentioned:

On Arabic Wikipedia, and other wikis with Flagged Revisions, it would be ideal if mentors could see not only the number of edits a user had completed, but also more details on the review status of edits.

The personalized praise idea is part of a larger Growth team Positive Reinforcement effort.

Designs

Personalized praise designs on Figma

Design for this task TBD.

Acceptance Criteria:

Given I'm a mentor viewing my Mentor dashboard from a Wiki that uses Flagged Revisions,
When I have a Mentee suggested for Praise,
Then I can see both a total edit count and a count of edits that have been reviewed

Event Timeline

Outcome of the last Ambassador meeting: many edits are pending at most wikis using FR due to a high number of bad edits and too few reviewers. Hence showing the two numbers (pending and validated) should be displayed separately, as it is more convenient to get how the mentee behaves. Sometimes mentors validate their mentees' edits if pending, which can be also a way to praise them.

Hi @Trizek-WMF, should the number of pending edits and validated edits have links to any specific pages?

Hi @Trizek-WMF, should the number of pending edits and validated edits have links to any specific pages?

Yes, they should go to separate links. The goal is to provide a handy link to pending edits, along with all edits.

We use Special:Contributions, with a specific filter for pending edits: Special:Contributions?flaggedrevs-only-pending=1&target=username.

Thank you @Trizek-WMF! Another question: do you know of any specific icons that are in use at the moment for representing flagged revisions (both pending and validated)? Looking into what icons to use for the module scorecards. Also pinging @Urbanecm_WMF, @Dyolf77_WMF, @Zapipedia-WMF, and @Ankan_WMF!

Hi @JFernandez-WMF ,
There is no specific icon in ar;wp, but I found this page on English Wikipedia with this icon to represent flagged revisions:

This is not an official icon. It is just part of a set of icons defined by English Wikipedia. They are re-used at a few wikis, but I think you can find something new, @JFernandez-WMF.

A pending edit needs to be checked and approved. It is the same with Patrolled edits.

Differences are:

  • FlaggedRevisions
    • won't let the edit being published
    • Users ar informed when one of their edits is pending, and when it is validated (IIRC)
  • Patrolled Edits
    • publishes it
    • Informs auto/patrolled users that the edit can be a reviewed (it is not mandatory.
    • The user who published the edit isn't informed when their edit is patrolled. Patrollers can see patrolled edits.

Hi all, commenting here the latest design iteration for this work on flagged revisions. As a recap, we were struggling with thinking of icon usage for representing pending and validated revisions separately. We explored some options and had a round of feedback on Design Review with other designers.

For pending revisions, we are aiming to use a new icon with the Edit pencil + the Clock icon as an accessory.

For validated revisions, we have more than one approach that I would love to get your feedback on!

Validated revisions represented with Content/Article iconValidated revisions represented with Check icon
Validated revisions - Content Article.png (517×448 px, 39 KB)
Validated revisions - Check.png (517×448 px, 39 KB)

Is there one you think works better, is more recognizable and intuitive, etc.? Thank you!

Thanks for the update @JFernandez-WMF!
I personally find the Check icon more intuitive, but curious if @Trizek-WMF or @Dyolf77_WMF have thoughts on this.

Can we have a pencil with a checkmark?
The checkmark alone seems to convey the idea of an official validation, not just an edit validation.

We could (see mock below), but this could mean an accessibility issue since we've found that the checkmark is too subtle and not that distinguishable (in comparison to the clock, for example).

Could the check be bolder, like the arrow's line? Or are we strictly blocked by the design guidelines there?

@Trizek-WMF thank you for the suggestion! For this, we want to try and re-use and existing icon that already lives inside of our components. Curious if you have any thoughts about using the ArticleCheck icon?

From my perspective, I agree that we should move forward with the the ArticleCheck icon. I personally think having too many similar pencil icons would make these scorecards harder to quickly parse. (The similar pencil icons reminds me a little of the Google app icon confusion).

I'm going to mark this task resolved so that we can move forward with the engineering work: T340154: Personalized praise improvements for Flagged revisions
But please free to follow up in that task if you have further feedback on the design. Thanks!

I checked for specific icons, and found T155878: Use OOUI icons for FlaggedRevs, where no icon for validated edits seems to exist. These edits are actually icon-less, as they are considered "regular" edits.

Going with the article check icon is a good first move. Maybe we'll need a different icon in the future.

I suggest that our next round of deployment of Personal Praise should include more wiki that use flagged revisions, to collect more feedback regarding the distinction of pending and validated edits.
