[Epic] Technical Decision Forum retrospective: Phase 1
Open, MediumPublic

Description

The general goal of this process is to revise the Wikimedia Technical Community technical decision-making process to ensure that it:

  1. involves relevant stakeholders
  2. results in long-term productive technical decisions
  3. decisions are documented

This is phase one of two. Phase one is gathering input and feedback. The second phase will be dealing with implementing changes and adjustments based on the conclusions from the current stage.

NOTE: Stakeholders who are most likely to find this relevant: People who do technical work that affects others in the Wikimedia environment: Contribute code to MediaWiki and our production code or who rely on production code for their code or tools.

Objectives

The objectives of this retro and consultation are to

  • Understand what are the expectations and needs of stakeholders from a decision-making process
  • Figure out who are the relevant stakeholders
    • WMF staff
    • WMDE and other affiliate staff
    • Volunteer developer community
  • Determine what type of decisions involve specific sub-groups of stakeholders
  • Design consultation with stakeholders to collect their expectations from technical decision-making
  • Distill the results of the consultation to a set of conclusions that lead to actionable changes in the decision-making process

A quick update on the status of the retrospective process: We have concluded the survey and had two listening sessions last week. We are currently evaluating the survey response and deciding whether more listening sessions are needed. This puts us roughly in the middle of the consultation phase.

We are quite happy with survey participation. A preliminary look at the data shows that we got over 250 responses, rough half from staff and half from volunteers.

The next steps will be to publish the evaluate the survey and publish our findings. Evaluating the survey is taking a while, since we had several free form questions. We now have to read, group and summaries about a thousad answers.

I was filling out the developer satisfaction survey today, which reminded of this. Its been several months since the last update and going on almost 9 months since the retrospective was announced.

Is this retrospective still a thing? I know there's been quite a few changes to teams around MW since this process was originally announced.

Yes, it is; sorry for lack of update in the interim. As Daniel wrote in September, evaluation and analysis took a while. Retro team members are working on a report with a summary of the survey data. Thanks in advance for your patience.
