This is because Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan are in https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Country_protection_list
This will only be fixed by something like T339318: Indicate that some country data are unavailable on Wikistats since those countries will not get removed from country protection list any time soon.

The above patches do what I suggested in a comment on the talk page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Requests_for_comment/Hiding_the_number_of_Russian/Belorussian/Kazakh_contributors_on_the_statistics_map which is to gray out the countries currently on the protection list and explain that the data is hidden. If and when the country list chagnes, we should update this or make it more reactive to the data itself.

@Milimetric: this is great, but I think it should be also indicated under the map that some countries do not have any results, so people can see this easier. For example, page view stats have this in the bottom: Those countries with less than 100 views are not reported and are blank in the map. Seems like the absence of data for privacy reasons is good to report there as well. Can you also add that?

I wanted to do that, but hesitated for now. The reason is, this is a translated message. So if I change it, it triggers a request for re-translation to people watching these messages on translatewiki. Since this was a bit of a rushed out-of-process patch, I didn't feel like I had a strong sense of what I should say and we haven't planned future work properly to know if it's not going to change again soon. So I didn't want to add that work to the translators.

If you disagree, and you think such a message would be useful, I can maybe add a hard-coded non-translated note. This did not seem ideal either, as the people most affected by this problem are perhaps not able to read English. But please let me know what you think.

You can split it in two translatable messages, it doesn’t have to be added to the one that was there. But I think both things should be translatable for the reasons you already outline: many people reading these false media reports might not be able to read English.

I agree, @stjn, hopefully that's not as hyper-urgent and maybe @VirginiaPoundstone + @lbowmaker can triage.

Hi! What's the plan for implementing the new data? I just noticed that views are hidden too: https://stats.wikimedia.org/#/ru.wikipedia.org/reading/page-views-by-country/normal|map|last-month|(access)~desktop*mobile-app*mobile-web|monthly.

I think it's OK to iterate on a translation to improve it. The tradeoff here of improving the translation is probably worth the translation time.

This wording change looks like it's deployed to stats.wikimedia.org, so we can probably close this ticket soon.

Perhaps that -1 should be changed to 0 though.

We won't be able to close this ticket until the map has the summarized and cleaned data.

I got a chance to add a link to the Country Protection list from the metric descriptions. I will not add a link to the older report on ruwiki editors. I feel the pain of lack of data there, but I'm going to respect the country protection list and just not publish any data from those countries. I don't see anything else left to do, moving to done.

Am I correct in understanding that nothing has been done or will be done to provide cleaned data?
