Add oblique grammar conversion for Northern Kurdish
Closed, ResolvedPublicFeature

Description

Kurdish-speaking users in Translatewiki requested a GRAMMAR function for (Northern) Kurdish to deal with some common problems. After chatting with them for a while in Telegram, I and they came to the conclusion that they would need one function currently, for getting definite oblique forms from indefinite nominative forms.

Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where):
A {{GRAMMAR:}} function for Northern Kurdish (ku) to convert words, based on their spelling, to the definite oblique form.

Use case(s) (list the steps that you performed to discover that problem, and describe the actual underlying problem which you want to solve. Do not describe only a solution):
This is primarily meant to be used in MediaWiki messages where {{SITENAME}} is involved.

Benefits (why should this be implemented?):
To get grammatically correct sentences in Northern Kurdish.

There is a patch for review here: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/core/+/876187

Plain text explanation of what it does:

  • If a word ends in î, change that to iyê
  • If a word ends in another vowel, add the suffix yê
  • If a word ends in a number (including 11, but excluding numbers ending in 1), add the suffix an
  • If a word ends in any other letter or number (including numbers ending in 1), add the suffix ê
  • (Implicitly) If none of the above rules match, do nothing. i.e. return the word as it was given to the function
