Description

Goal

We want to re-calculate data for Special:Mute usage and the mute usage in general. We saw a spike between July, 2020 (T244781#6358015, T262474) and March 2021 (T278267) . We should look into the current status of the metrics.

Summary

Trend of traditional mute usage

The increase in traditional mute usage, starting from Jun 2020, came to an end in April 2021.
The growth is mainly from French Wikipedia (frwiki) and Italian Wikipedia (itwiki).
Since April 2021, the usage returned to its previous level and stayed flat.
English wikipeida (enwiki) is the top one wiki that mostly used mute list

Below graph shows the trend of traditional mute usage across wikis.

Adoption of special mute

2020-10 is an incomplete month as we just started to keep sanitized data.
2023-03 is an incomplete month as we decommissioned instrumentation in March, 2023.
The usage of special mute has surged twice from September 2022 to March 2023, reaching its peak at 694 in February 2023.
Wiki Commons, English Wikipedia, Meta Wiki and Media wiki the primary contributors to the growth.

Below graph shows the trend of special mute usage across wikis.

Special mute user behavior analysis on option selection

Users have two options to select: mute notifications and mute email. The two most popular selection combinations are: 1) mute both notification and email, 2) mute notification only. The current analysis result is the same as the previous one in March 2021.(T278267)
