Extend The Wikipedia Library homepage with additional information
Open, In Progress, Needs TriagePublic

Description

The Wikipedia Library homepage (https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/ when not logged in) is our default landing page for linking to the library, including in the on-wiki notification. It is very optimised for getting users to log in, but doesn't provide much detail on what the library actually is. We would like to extend it with some content to contextualise what the tool provides access to and why it's useful.

The primary audience of this content is Wikipedia editors, particularly those who recently reached the threshold for access, who are coming to the library for the first time and don't know what it is or how it works.

Some thoughts coming back to this a while after I initially mocked this out:

  • "140+ projects" is ambiguous - what we mean is TWL has been used by editors on that many projects.
  • Is 'Monthly users / monthly citations / projects' actually that useful for editors? They're the primary audience of this page. Perhaps it would be better for these stats to highlight library content, e.g. number of publishers, number of languages, volume of content in some way?
  • @FRomeo_WMF @sjvipin and I talked today about the possibility of creating an engaging explainer video for the library. We could use this in place of the screenshot in my mockup.

@OTichonova when we have more design capacity (i.e. not this month!) I'd love to get your input and expertise on this :)

Thank you for tagging this task with good first task for Wikimedia newcomers!

Newcomers often may not be aware of things that may seem obvious to seasoned contributors, so please take a moment to reflect on how this task might look to somebody who has never contributed to Wikimedia projects.

A good first task is a self-contained, non-controversial task with a clear approach. It should be well-described with pointers to help a completely new contributor, for example it should clearly pointed to the codebase URL and provide clear steps to help a contributor get setup for success. We've included some guidelines at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/good_first_task/ !

Thank you for helping us drive new contributions to our projects <3

Hi @Ravitej_Neeli - thanks for claiming this task. Do you need any support with getting up to speed or working on this?

Hi @Samwalton9-WMF can you tell me from where can i get the images so that i can add it to the homepage
