Make terms and licensing clear for superset.wmcloud.org
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

As with quarry, superset is still governed by WMCS Terms of use, and all SQL and other generated content is licensed under CC0. Ensure this is reflected in the documentation, and potentially within the tool itself if possible.

Ideas:

  • Make a landing page on wiki for superset that has the same / similar boilerplate as quarry ""SQL Code licensing of CC0, By running queries you agree to the Cloud Services Terms of Use and you irrevocably agree to release your SQL under CC0 License"."
  • Update the default SQL query to have licensing text in a comment
  • Customize superset to allow for this. However, https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/20159 is a year old at this point, and shows that superset is still developing the ability to theme.

https://medium.com/@supreethmc/superset-customization-of-the-logo-within-a-docker-container-eccff32a6e39 has the idea of pulling down the container and then modifying it while it's running. This kind of parallels what I'm seeing, that there is the general assumption you're working on a system, where you can patch in code directly and run a systemctl restart superset, rather than a container.

"By browsing this page you agree to the Cloud Services Terms of Use and you irrevocably agree to release your contributions under the CC0 license" is a better message, I think. (All content (descriptions, titles, etc) should be CC0-licensed too, not just queries).
