Images again in an incorrect order in article preview
Open, LowPublicBUG REPORT

Description

This is an issue that was reported by me months ago. It was fixed then, if I am not mistaken. Now, it seems it has returned.

An order of images when presented in article preview is different then the actual order when you tap any of these images and start browsing them in image viewer.

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • Open "List of unsolved deaths" in Wikipedia Android app.
  • Browse through linked articles and compare image order between article preview and image viewer.
  • The below list of examples assumes that article preview has incorrect order while the one in image viewer is correct.

Abbreviations used in the below list:

  • MI - Missing Image (available in image viewer, missing in article preview)
  • IO - Incorrect Order of images in article preview (other than in image viewer)
  • AP - Article Preview
  • IV - Image Viewer

Examples (going from top):

  • Cleopatra: (MI) images 1-10 presented in article preview are in fact images 26-36. Image viewer has 25 (!) more images before the one that appears first in article preview
  • Zoroaster: (MI) same as above, but only two images are missing in article preview (and prepends image that is first in article preview, but therefore third in image viewer)
  • Hansanlu Lovers": (IO) first image in AP is in fact second in IV
  • Amy Robsart: (MI) three prepending images are missing in AP
  • Emile Zola: (MI) three prepending images are missing in AP
  • Tom Thomson: (MI) image no 1 presented in AP is in fact no 59. IV 58 (!) more prepending images
  • George Mallory: (MI) fifteen (15) prepending images are missing in AP
  • Rudolf Steiner: (MI) eight prepending images are missing in AP
  • Robert Johnson": (IO) first image in AP is in fact second in IV
  • Lucas Samalenge": (IO) two images flipped together between AP and IV
  • Isdal Woman": (IO) first image in AP is second in IV; last image in AP is first in IV.

These are only a couple of examples. Many more articles are totally correct when comparing image count and order between AP and IV.

It is impossible (for me) to determine "the rule" of this bug. The nature of it seems very random:

  1. For example, there as a number of articles having only two images (in both AP and IV) that has switched order. While in the same time there is the same or even larger number of articles, also having two images only, which order is perfectly fine and matches between AP and IV.
  2. Another examples is a large number of three-image articles, where first image in AP appears as second or last in IV. And then again there is a large, probably even larger set of three-image articles which order is correct and matches between AP and IV.
  3. For articles with large number of images there can be 1-2-3 missing images in AP (when compared to IV) and in the same time there are both articles perfectly fine and articles (like "Cleopatra" or "Tom Thomson") with dozens of images missing in AP in compare to IV.

Might be T275349?

Yes, exactly that one. Then only difference is that:

  • In T275349 we were dealing with: doubled images and wrong order of the images
  • Here we are dealing with missing images and wrong order of the images

Other than that these two issues seems exactly the same.
