Does it do any better with the gadget disabled?
I've not had much luck using the regular textarea-based editor to work in Android (it technically works but is very hard to navigate and scroll through), while I don't think that the contentEditable-style editor that I think that gadget uses works at all in Android.

Yes - it works "better" with the gadget disabled, in the sense that it is possible to edit. But you are right: it is still very difficult even without the gadget.
Is it possible to just completely disable that gadget from opening on a mobile device, or at least on an Android device?
Its equally useless on iOS. What support does the gadget system have for a selective disable?
I think we can close this ticket. The Gadgets (-extension) phabricator project usually does not deal with tickets of specific gadgets. The support forum for wikEd is well known: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Cacycle/wikEd
The gadget is however currently not well maintained, so I advise disabling it.
