Lead research to investigate how to better leverage MinT (A Wikimedia Open-source Translation Platform) to support readers and contributors (WE2.2)
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

[Hypothesis] Scaling Open Translation service will increase page interactions from underserved communities. Build a website that exposes our machine translation service to support the automatic translation of user-provided text and Wikipedia articles. Make the service available for 50 languages not supported by commercial vendors such as Google Translate. This will increase page interactions from underserved communities by (a) making millions of Wikipedia articles more accessible with automatic translation, and (b) increasing awareness of Wikipedia being available in their language with an increase of content created using translation tools.

The goal of this research project in support of the hypothesis is to understand how to better leverage MinT to support more readers and contributors, especially those whose languages are receiving machine translation support for the first time or receiving additional machine translation options, in their aim of accessing, interacting with, and contributing to Wikipedia content, as well as knowledge more generally.
