References moved to the end of the sentence and links disappear when translated with MinT
Open, HighPublic

Description

When translating the Ambrose Bierce article from English to Banlga sentences with references in the middle are moved to the end, and links are not present when they are translated with MinT.

The expected behaviour would be for MinT to keep the references in a consistent position with the original sentence and links to be adapted in Content and Section Translation.

Below you can compare:

  • Original sentence and MinT translation. Original sentence with 2 links and 2 references (one in the middle of the sentence and one at the end) gets a suggested translation using MinT with 2 references at the end of the sentence and no links.
  • MinT and other MT services. The menu to select translations from other services shows how Google Translate keeps references in a consistent place and links are present, while MinT moves references to the end and lacks links.

This seems a regression, since Content Translation was able to adapt links as shown in this video recorded some months ago.

Event Timeline

After recent changes, links seem to be preserved now. References still moving to the end of the sentence.

Yes, references are moved to the end of sentence. Also seen in this example below. The positioning of references after the correct position in translation is slightly complicated and need to be implemented.

As part of the testing in T338689#9249005, I found another instance of links disappearing:

The link to "Brown v. Board of Education" is shown in the translation when using Google Translate but only showing as plain-text when using MinT:

The example is based on the translation of a section of the Critical race theory article (quick link).
