Event Timeline

I requested translations for this from design research today @JTannerWMF. I’ll move this task to ready for dev once I get the translations ✅.

Hi @scblr

Thank you for letting me know.
Few things we probably need to change on the sheet:

  • Explore nearby Wikipedia articles with 'Places' the copy has changed to Discover Wikipedia articles around you with Places
  • Saved needs translation
  • Unwatch needs translation
  • What would you like us to change or improve? needs translation
  • Location permission is required to see your location on the map. Please try again. needs translation

Not sure if I could add them to the sheet directly, so reporting here.

Thanks for letting me know @Sharvaniharan. I updated the sheet and asked design research to get translations.

@Sharvaniharan I updated the sheet with the new translations for Hindi and Bangla:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EBOmwhg3aZb3YxwGO5DpaJE7Vmnlu0FzEelKvLKCky0/edit#gid=0

I noticed that the Hindi translation for Discover Wikipedia articles around you with Places uses Latin characters: Places के साथ अपने आस-पास केविकिपीडिया आर्टिकल्स देखें. This hasn’t been the case though for the initial translation though (Explore nearby Wikipedia articles with 'Places'स्थानों' के साथ आस-पास केविकिपीडिया आर्टिकल्स को एक्स्प्लोरकरें.

Could you please double-check and verify that translation in the sheet? That’d be great!

And: We are still waiting for the Urdu translations.

Hi @scblr

Thank you for checking-in on the translations. I took a closer look into the Hindi translations, and I found that there were other strings where:

  1. Even though in the Hindi alphabet, they were transliterations instead of Hindi equivalent translation of the words.
  2. We use | for period in Hindi instead of . . Have changed this.
  3. In a few places there was a space missing between words
  4. Very minor grammatical errors [Singular/plural]

Have updated the above issues and updated a few translations and have changed them to the updated version in our app as well. To avoid confusion I have created Updated Hindi column to indicate the strings I have corrected

Thank you for update on Urdu. Will update when we get them back.

Hi @scblr @JTannerWMF

I remember we wanted to have a custom release not for Places. Given that the release is scheduled for next week, should we add the notes to the translation request?

Good idea Sharvani!

Release notes:
The Places Feature Returns: We're thrilled to reintroduce the long-awaited Places feature in our latest update, responding to the persistent requests from our dedicated users! Explore Wikipedia articles tailored to your current location or any location of your choice. Whether you're traveling, curious about nearby landmarks, or simply interested in learning more about your surroundings, Places provides an immersive and informative experience.

@scblr
I have updated the google sheet. Please review when you get a chance. thank you.

@Sharvaniharan, we are still waiting on Urdu translations. I chatted with Satdeep Gill this morning and he will help us with the translations at the beginning of next week.

On another note, we received the translations for the release note (except for Urdu):

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EBOmwhg3aZb3YxwGO5DpaJE7Vmnlu0FzEelKvLKCky0/edit#gid=1602862707

The Hindi translation, again, uses the Latin feature name "Places". If you could review it again, that’d be great!

Thanks

Hey @Sharvaniharan. Thanks to fantastic support from @satdeep_gill – we were finally able to add the Urdu translations to the spreadsheet.

@satdeep_gill mentioned that a few Hindi translations could be optimized. Here’s the Diff of the changes he made. I know you invested some time in these translations as well, @Sharvaniharan, so please look at the changes in the Hindi column, ok?

Other than that, this is good to go, and I’m moving it to the Ready for dev column. Also CC'ing @dchen, as there were some hiccups getting Urdu translations.

Great teamwork everyone! 👏

Hi @scblr
Thank you for all the work on this! All translations look great!
Thank you @satdeep_gill !🙌
