Challenges with finding events
"It is not easy to find events"
- No central place for events: You have to go to multiple places to find events that interest you.
- Accessibility and inclusion: If you are not deep in the movement or belong to various groups, you will neither be invited nor find out about events.
- Information overload: Event notifications are lost in a myriad of messages in the different Wikimedia groups.
Ideas
- A central place to find campaign events happening on Wiki with filters and the ability to personalise based on interest
- Others: Finding events near you based on device location, Notifications/Alerts and direct invitations, and Central banner.
Feedback on Ideas
1. A central place for events
"This would really, really make finding events easier, far, far easier because I mean, if you have one central place, whenever anybody feels like contributing, you could easily just go to that space"
Information to be shown and filters needed for the Event list
New Information
- Wiki project
- Organizer
- Language
- Location
Comments on information already shown in the design
- Date: Events should be arranged majorly by date/time. Filtering by date is necessary.
- Timezone: Though UTC is becoming more familiar with wiki medians it is not understood worldwide.
- Short description: To easily understand what the event is about without reading much text.
- Usergroup: "I like the fact, it has like a drop-down tab where you can search for your user group and communities. This really helps me know the specific community events and also helps me to see what other user groups and communities are doing. I think that's nice"
- Event type: Editing events, trainings, panels, photo contest...
- Event meeting type: Make clear the difference between Event meeting type and event type.
Visual Design
Improve the visual design: Do a comprehensive visual redesign of the UI, reduce text density, and integrate engaging graphics, logos, and visual elements. These changes will boost visual appeal, facilitate engagement, and cater to both new and experienced users by making the material more accessible and attractive.
Entry points
Entrypoint should be:
- Easy to find and assess by both new and experienced editors
- Available on all wikis
- On meta
- On your user page
2. Event Notifications
"This will make it easier because it helps you remember. It serves as a reminder that a particular campaign or event is happening soon, allowing you to prepare for it."
"Don't have to reach out to organisers or search different channels for events, user groups, social media"
Feedback
Ensure one doesn't have too many notifications and can opt-out anytime.
Notification channel
- Echo
3. Related events on the Event page
Good for participants but may be detrimental to organizers
Feedback
- A disadvantage to organizers.
- It can take participants away from their event page.
- The information on the page becomes too much, and participants can get lost.
- Participants get to find more similar events that might also interest them.
