Background
As part of the upload wizard improvement project we released improvements to the release right step of the upload wizard - T347298
The next step is to improve the "describe step" of the upload wizard so that uploaders can provide us with the relevant information on their media. This may not only enrich the information associated with media but also help moderators in assessing problematic media through all the information provided by the uploader.
Design discovery
As part of the design discovery process we looked at:
- Feedback from interviews with uploaders on Commons
- Upload Wizard usability test with newcomers
- Community discussion on existing fields
- Analytics on describe step T359487
- Discussions and brainstorming with the team
Design Goals
Based on the design discovery and problem space exploration above, we have identified these key areas of improvement:
- Reduce visual clutter so that uploaders can fill out the form easily
- Provide clarity on the information we ask uploaders to enter so that they can provide us quality information
- Reduce number of steps (where possible) so that users can publish the media in fewer steps. (Also make publishing the last step rather than a third last step currently which may be confusing to the users right now)
- Introduce questions, answers to which could allows functionaries to moderate content better for e.g. knowing location of the place can help with FOP moderation
- Provide contextual education to users about what media they can or cannot upload so that we can reduce the number of problematic uploads
