Link: unify the name of the blue link across both Guidelines and Demos
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Background

In the Link component's page in Codex we are using the following names for the Blue link:

  • Default link
  • Standard link
  • Base link

We must select one of these names and establish it as the definitive nomenclature for blue links, ensuring consistency across both Codex and Figma libraries.

Open questions

  • Which name do we want to use for blue links? Default, Standard, or Base? - We will use "Base" as name for blue links.

Acceptance criteria (or Done)

  • Decide the name for blue Link (Base)
  • Update the names in the Link component's page in Codex
  • Update the name in the Figma libraries (Codex and OOUI)

Event Timeline

I would opt for "Standard Link" for the blue link, as it aligns with the name used in the Demo and Figma. I propose updating the remaining names in the Guidelines ("Default" and "Base") to "Standard."

I would actually like to propose a new option of "Progressive Link" for links that are blue. When considering that we might add in a "Neutral Link" which is black, any of these options (standard, default, base) all feel more closely related to "neutral". Some related tasks talking about Neutral Links: T329963 and T311270

Thanks for coming back to this, unifying makes a lot of sense here.
I'd be against default as I'd refer to an unstyled HTML link by “default” ;)
I'd also don't think that “progressive” is a good fit in the case of a link even though it features the same color in the default theme, as we also don't say “destructive” for the “Red Link” as it's not general progression we're describing with a “base” Link in contrast to the progressive Buttons.
I'd go for “base” as we use the term for our baseline in many different cases.

Would we consider calling it "Blue Link" to be in line with the term "Red Link"?

“Red Link” has got a semantic meaning within Wiki community, even though it features a color. It's only used for this action in Wikiverse.

In an internal Design-System-Team discussion we aligned on the term "Base".

Note this will need to be added to Figma too @bmartinezcalvo
