Import Codex Icons into Commons
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Can the Codex Icons be imported on Commons for wiki reuse? I don't remember if OOUI icons can be directly reused within the wikicode, but at least they are on Commons.

Hadn't thought about this -- what's an example of how you would want to be re-using the icons in wikitext using Commons?

I like to point out that I communicate quite a bit about Codex on frwiki. This means that certain topics raised by the community can be covered by Codex.

Last week, some frwiki contributors wanted to update the icons used here and there. Discussions turned to how to use Codex icons since only design tokens are available. OOUI icons are available on Commons for reuse.

Okay I will check with the team to see if there are any concerns about doing this. It's just not something we've discussed before, but I can see how it's useful. The question of "stability" of icons also hasn't really come up yet.

CCiufo-WMF renamed this task from Are Codex Icons stable enough to import on Commons to Import Codex Icons into Commons.Apr 26 2024, 8:56 PM
CCiufo-WMF moved this task from Triaging to Backlog on the Design-System-Team board.

Any news? I can import them, I just need approval.

@Lofhi thanks for checking back! We think it would be fine to upload to Commons for use in wikitext. Just note Design-System-Team would not keep the icons on Commons in sync with the changes in Codex. An officially supported solution would probably look more like T357463.

I got a start on this at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_Codex_icons

These are the only icons I intend on copying over for the time being. Anyone should feel free to copy the others, just please use the same category and naming scheme.

Someone veyr kind uploaded all the black SVGs yesterday. Well I haven't even confirmed if it was all 249 icons (because I have no idea how to that efficiently.

Please can someone kindly assist me in doing the following, I really don't know at all how to operate the code, I've been scratching my head, and honestly it would save me so many life hours and so many wasted life-years-lived if someone could assist me with this:

  1. Check that all 289 files in Category:Wikimedia Codex icons are accounted for as the "249" icons in the pack, the duplicates can be marked with {{duplicate}}.
  2. But, mainly: Is there any chance you could help me generate the same icons again, but each set in a different subfolder with a different color applied?
    1. viz. for each color @color-base @color-subtle @color-placeholder @color-notice @color-error @color-warning @color-success into a subfolder of 249 icons named after the 'color'. I guess invert should please be included if it's not.
    2. only need the largest size, per image policy, and we can shrink on our side to the smaller size on our side anyway.

Thanks so much!

Hi. I ensured all icons in Commons at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_Codex_icons.

Available in @color-base @color-subtle @color-placeholder @color-notice @color-error @color-warning @color-success and #000.

There's is a template at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Template:Codex_icon and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Codex_icon for importing icon in an easier fashion in wikitext.
