Restore Google as the default MT service to avoid MinT issues with references
Open, MediumPublic

Description

Content Translation supports multiple translation services. With the recent creation and evolution of MinT, MinT was set as the default service where there have been indicators of good quality in the translations (T353136, T353259, T341458) in order to better support the communities and provide open alternatives for translation services which allow communities to more easily participate in improving. However, issues with reference handling have been reported T363563: Avoid references losing their data (showing as plain-text "[1]") when added to the translation using MinT

In order to avoid the noise introduced to cause additional work for editors in the community, we propose to change back the default machine translation service to use Google Translate for a set of languages where the issue shave been more frequent. These include:

  • Gujarati (gu/guj_Gujr)
  • Oriya (or/ory_Orya)
  • Urdu (ur/urd_Arab)
  • Igbo (ig/ibo_Latn)

Once the ajustment is made, we'll analyze data and process community feedback to identify how to move forward while working on fixing the issue with references (T363563).

Event Timeline

Is there a place were it lists all the languages for which MinT is the default? Someone needs to test them.

By the way, how long until the default is changed? We have a effort rolling out in Igbo right now. I am doing video conferences to try to teach people how to change the default themselves which is not ideal.

@UOzurumba is working on the communication with the communities. As we complete that step we can make the change to the configuration.
