Floating IP for Wikispore
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Project Name: wikispore
Type of quota increase requested: floating ip
Amount of quota increase: 1
Reason: Wikimedia NYC would like to run a campaign that uses https://owmf-test.wmcloud.org/ (which is in the Wikispore project for now) and the city government might be willing to provide a somewhat official domain (map.wiki.nyc) for that.

Event Timeline

The new site will be a mapping portal for free knowledge content related to the city from Wikipedia/Wikidata/other sister projects, as well as OpenStreetMap and Wikispore.

Some background on an earlier vision for the project is here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Open_Boro_Map

Using floating ips for http/https endpoints and the use of vanity domains is currently a bit of a gray zone. We will discuss this request during our next WMCS team meeting (2024-05-30) and get back to you then.

We are declining this request because, under current policy, this use case does not qualify for a floating IP.

In the future, we do want to support custom domains T342398: Create mechanism to allow the use of vanity domains by projects behind the Cloud VPS shared HTTP proxy – please feel free to create another request if/when NYC city provides you with an official domain, as things may have changed by then.
