Communities that have Suggested links shouldn't have Add a link in Community configuration
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Spotted at French Wikipedia's Community configuration: you have two tasks to add links

  • Add links between articles
  • Add a link

The distinction between the two tasks is unclear.

Plus, the two configurations are declared as active, while only Add a link is listed on the Homepage.

@Trizek-WMF Since you opened this task we've updated the copy to help clarify the difference:

  • Add links between articles
  • Add a link (Structured task)

When the Structured task is enabled, then the "Add links between articles" task won't display to newcomers as an option in Suggested Edits.

I agree that the configuration is somewhat confusing, but I wonder if there is benefit in allowing admins to see that there is an unstructured task (Add links between articles) available if they decide to turn off the Structured task?

I think we should simplify the process beyond changing the copy:

  • if Add a link (Structured task) is available, then Add links between articles is not available in Community configuration (nor to users).
  • if Add a link (Structured task) is turned off, then Add links is not shown, like if no alternative exists. If Add a link was turned off, then I don't believe that the local community would fancy turning on a task that allows users to add links anywhere within an article. :)

If Add a link was turned off, then I don't believe that the local community would fancy turning on a task that allows users to add links anywhere within an article. :)

Isn't that essentially what happened at Arabic Wikipedia? They disabled the structured task, but they are OK with having the unstructured links task available (Arabic Suggested Edits Community Configuration).
