Decommission clouddb2002-dev.codfw.wmnet
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

This task will track the decommission-hardware of server <enter FQDN of server here>.

With the launch of updates to the decom cookbook, the majority of these steps can be handled by the service owners directly. The DC Ops team only gets involved once the system has been fully removed from service and powered down by the decommission cookbook.

<ENTER SINGLE HOSTNAME PER CHECKLIST HERE>

Steps for service owner:

  • - all system services confirmed offline from production use
  • - set all icinga checks to maint mode/disabled while reclaim/decommmission takes place. (likely done by script)
  • - remove system from all lvs/pybal active configuration
  • - any service group puppet/hiera/dsh config removed
  • - remove site.pp, replace with role(spare::system) recommended to ensure services offline but not 100% required as long as the decom script is IMMEDIATELY run below.
  • - login to cumin host and run the decom cookbook: cookbook sre.hosts.decommission <host fqdn> -t <phab task>. This does: bootloader wipe, host power down, netbox update to decommissioning status, puppet node clean, puppet node deactivate, debmonitor removal, and run homer.
  • - remove all remaining puppet references and all host entries in the puppet repo
  • - reassign task from service owner to no owner and ensure the site project (ops-sitename depending on site of server) is assigned.

End service owner steps / Begin DC-Ops team steps:

  • - system disks removed (by onsite)
  • - determine system age, under 5 years are reclaimed to spare, over 5 years are decommissioned.
  • - IF DECOM: system unracked and decommissioned (by onsite), update netbox with result and set state to offline
  • - IF DECOM: mgmt dns entries removed.
  • - IF RECLAIM: set netbox state to 'inventory' and hostname to asset tag

Original task description:

Is anybody using this host? The only reference I found is in T229559, and it looks like it's the replacement for clouddb2001-dev, which in turn was used as a database for the codfw OpenStack deployment (see e.g. T220096).

The host name can cause some confusion because it uses the same naming scheme of the wikireplica hosts clouddb10*, but from what I can understand it has nothing to do with wikireplicas.

For us DBAs, we still have to apply production schema changes to its database (labtestwiki)

fnegri triaged this task as Low priority.Jul 4 2024, 4:31 PM

Confirming what Manuel has said: This is needed as it powers https://labtestwikitech.wikimedia.org, it's quite a snowflake and I would appreciate if it's removed but AFAIK it's used by WMCS for testing of integrations (See T310795: Revive Labtestwikitech (formerly: Abolish labtestwikitech) for more info). If WMCS thinks they don't need that anymore (idm is replacing some functionalities I think), then by all means kill it with fire.

Labtestwiki is gone (sans a few config cleanups) so I think this can be done now.

The other database on that host is codfw1dev striker. Quoth bd808:

I'm not sure the Striker in codfw1dev ever worked, but maybe t.aavi did get it running at some point. I don't have any particular attachment to it.

So I think that db can just be archived and destroyed.

The Striker DB is empty but for the schema. So, abandoning.

cookbooks.sre.hosts.decommission executed by andrew@cumin1002 for hosts: clouddb2002-dev.codfw.wmnet

  • clouddb2002-dev.codfw.wmnet (PASS)
    • Downtimed host on Icinga/Alertmanager
    • Found physical host
    • Downtimed management interface on Alertmanager
    • Wiped all swraid, partition-table and filesystem signatures
    • Powered off
    • [Netbox] Set status to Decommissioning, deleted all non-mgmt IPs, updated switch interfaces (disabled, removed vlans, etc)
    • Configured the linked switch interface(s)
    • Removed from DebMonitor
    • Removed from Puppet master and PuppetDB
Andrew added a project: ops-codfw.

This host is shut down and removed from puppet. It's only a couple of years old so should probably not be recycled but since we don't have an official spare pool anymore I'll leave this to dcops to judge.
