Review wikis that have Add Link models but do not have Add Link enabled
Closed, ResolvedPublic1 Estimated Story Points

Description

While filling T370558: Disable Add Link backend on hywwiki, I noticed there is a couple of wikis that have Add Link model published at https://analytics.wikimedia.org/published/datasets/one-off/research-mwaddlink/, but do not have Add Link backend enabled in WMF Config. This feels like a deployment process left mid-way. If the models are not correct, they should be unpublished, so that the API does not serve improper link recommendations. If they are correct, then Add Link should likely be enabled.

This impacts the following wikis:

Within this task, we should review what the status of those wikis is, and either unpublish the models (if they are wrong), or deploy Add Link. Alternatively, we can document the reason for this inconsistency, if there is any.

Acceptance Criteria:
  • connect with the Machine Translation team to ensure they agree with our approach.
  • enable task on novwiki, nrmwiki and nvwiki (factored out to T371600)
  • decommission models for nawik & akwiki (factored out to T371598)

@KStoller-WMF @Trizek-WMF Would you mind reviewing the deployment for those wikis, once you have some time, and figure out why we ended up with this inconsistency?

KStoller-WMF triaged this task as High priority.
KStoller-WMF moved this task from Inbox to Up Next (estimated tasks) on the Growth-Team board.
  • akwiki was part of round 4, but has not enough content to suggest links T304548#8008475
  • nawiki was excluded (not enough recommendations) T308137#9127717
  • novwiki, nrmwiki and nvwiki were all part of round 13; deployed but with not excluded section titles T308138#9090826

We should work on deploying Add a link if possible, for consistency.

KStoller-WMF set the point value for this task to 1.

novwiki, nrmwiki and nvwiki were all part of round 13; deployed but with not excluded section titles

@Trizek-WMF - do you think this is a blocker to release? Could we just include the recommendation to populate that section in configuration when we announce the release?

What confuses me is that they should have been deployed. It was announced but not done.
I would regrouped all announcements in one set, with the missing wikis (mainly ja and zh), when the work on the model will be finished. Until them, given the traffic on these wikis, I think we are safe to wait.

KStoller-WMF lowered the priority of this task from High to Medium.Jul 24 2024, 9:13 PM

  • akwiki was part of round 4, but has not enough content to suggest links T304548#8008475
  • nawiki was excluded (not enough recommendations) T308137#9127717

I filled T371598: Unpublish Add Link models for wikis where it did not work for unpublishing those models. We can do them again once the situation improves.

  • novwiki, nrmwiki and nvwiki were all part of round 13; deployed but with not excluded section titles T308138#9090826

Add Link was not deployed to any of those wikis. Filled T371600: Deploy Add Link to three more wikis for the deployment.

Looks like the review is done – thanks @Trizek-WMF. The rest of the work should now be split to other tasks, which are linked above and from the description.
