Make phorge.wikimedia.org a redirect to phabricator.wikimedia.org
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Currently, the URL phorge.wikimedia.org does not redirect to phabricator.wikimedia.org. Although the site uses Phorge since T333885 and says Phabricator is powered by Phorge., the URL is still phabricator.wikimedia.org. So, phorge.wikimedia.org should perhaps be made a redirect to phabricator.wikimedia.org.

Why not (contrary to my reasoning, which I have just added)? In any case, I am going to leave this task declined.

I agree that it would be nice if we didn't have a domain pinned to the old name of the software, but there is so much legacy stuff inter-tangled with the existing name that we don't have a lot of appetite for changing it.

On the other hand, if we do decide to change it, adding a redirect seems like it would go in the wrong direction.

I'm also not sure that we'd use phorge.wikimedia.org, although generic names like tasks. have their own set of problems. (What happens when you switch out the underlying software, etc.)

Naming is hard. In the meantime, I think it remains fairly discoverable and I don't think a lot of people are trying to reach it by way of a domain that doesn't currently exist. Let's avoid adding complexity until we need it.

Why not (contrary to my reasoning, which I have just added)?

Because it creates long-term maintenance costs so I request arguments why to change/add something. It's irrelevant for end users that "Phabricator is powered by Phorge." It's a technical implementation detail. Wikipedia is powered by MediaWiki, what does that mean for your expectations regarding the Wikipedia URL?
