We have at least one user request (T371129#10033179) for this feature, and it seems like it might be useful in a bunch of other parts of WMF production as well (for instance Event-Platform) .

This is complicated though:

• The OTel 'semantic conventions' which formalizes how spans should be structured in "messaging systems" is still in "enhancement proposal" phase: https://github.com/open-telemetry/oteps/blob/main/text/trace/0220-messaging-semantic-conventions-span-structure.md
• Most of the proposals in that document, and most of existing practice or existing protocol compatibility layers relies upon span links, which Jaeger doesn't have great support for
