De Gruyter access error for some content
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

On some URLs, e.g. this one users are receiving an error message instead of content:

Max challenge attempts exceeded. Please refresh the page to try again!

We are using the OCLC-provided proxy stanza, so this error isn't something we have any control over. We've contacted De Gruyter support.

Event Timeline

We had an incident late last week where we had to implement some tight restrictions on database searches especially for proxy IP users (as recent crawler activity has been occurring which overwhelms our servers). I have been advised that as of tomorrow you should no longer get this error. We apologize for the inconvenience and are actively seeking solutions that both stabilize the platform/servers as well as keeping illicit crawler/bot activity to a minimum.

"tomorrow" is today, so I'll try again later, still not working at the time of writing.

Seems to be happening again. I'll contact De Gruyter support.

De Gruyter confirmed this is a temporary measure and they're working on a fix.

No access since today. Goes straight to home page.

This is due to the merger between DeGruyter and Brill. The two websites were migrated to a new domain https://www.degruyterbrill.com/ and the new site does not realise a request comes from the TWL proxy.

If you try search (up right) you will still be directed to the old interface, but there is no access to nonfree content.

BTW, brill.com seems still to be working over our proxy, while https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T366427 is pending.

Thanks for reporting this. I have reached out to our contacts at Brill to see how they can help. We will update here as soon we get a response.

Thanks for your early response.

Would you reach out to Brill, or rather to DeGruyter? I do not know, because the two publishing houses have merged, as I already said, and brill.com still seems to work over our proxy, while degruyter.com is affected, redirecting to https://www.degruyterbrill.com/ .

Yes, our contact is in a senior leader at Brill so they should be able to help with both. I am also trying to get in touch with De Gruyter contacts. Hopefully, one of these conversations will fix this.

Please note that an employee of Wikimedia Deutschland has already contacted De Gruyter as can be seen in the German Wikipedia discussion linked above.

Yes, I am in touch with Rabea already. Thanks :)

Wikimedia Deutschland and the Wikimedia Foundation are in close contact on these issues.

message from De Gruyter: we need to update the Stanza so that access via EZproxy works again; De Gruyter's configuration should work otherwise

latest Stanza version: https://help.oclc.org/Library_Management/EZproxy/EZproxy_database_stanzas/Database_stanzas_D/De_Gruyter_Online

Our ezproxy instance is hosted by ezproxy and we use their provided configs wherever possible. The config that you linked to is what we have:
https://github.com/WikipediaLibrary/twlight_ezproxy/blob/9ef2bca694cc26788495cc0cdb4bbcc9b96f1dc6/expert/ezproxy.cfg#L192-L194

So the include directive that we have in our configuration is correct, but when I check the listing in ezproxy I can see that it still has the old version:

This is some kind of technical hiccup on the oclc hosting side, and we'll need to open a support ticket about it

This should now be fixed; please have a look and let us know! It looks good in my spot checks.

Congratulations!

It works fine.

Unfortunately we're not out of the woods yet. Attempts to view e-books still yield a "Wikimedia Foundation doesn't have access to this resource error."

I don’t seem to have any problems. For example, the Marx & Engels collected works (MEGA) volumes, which are advertised on DGB’s eBooks section as part of their special eBooks collections, is available to me as a PDF download.

And yesterday I verified this was working by trying (successfully) to download the Etymological Dictionary of Akkadian in both PDF and EPUB formats.

@Carolynparrishfan , could you please indicate which e-books you cannot access?

@Aschmidt It turns out I am able to get access when using the DeGruyterBrill.com domain @Hermes_Thrice_Great linked to. So it would appear that it's just the Wikipedia Library landing page that needs to be updated, as it currently only lists the old separate Brill and DeGruyter sites.

I'm afraid I do not understand what you mean. The TWL landing page links to https://wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/login?auth=production&url=https://www.degruyterbrill.com/ which looks perfectly allright, doesn't it? As the old website for Brill remains online, there is no need to change anything here. I think, the only thing that would need an update is the header for the DeGruyter partner there because this now links to degruyterbrill.com with a new name an a new logo.

You may need to perform a hard reload (Ctrl+F5) of the home page if you are still getting the old url somehow

https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/users/my_library/ still shows this issue impacts De Gruyter access, even though it's been resolved. Can the yellow tag thing be removed?

Thanks for pointing that out! It should be removed by now.

Since a few weeks (?) I cannot access the "Artists of the World" (AoW) database. Wikipedia Library had provided access to it until recently. https://www-degruyterbrill-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/database/aow/html has an "Unlicensed" tag. Is this related to the issue of this ticket or has De Gruyter Brill revoked access for it for Wikipedia Library? If this is gone it would be a huge loss.
