In the ticket Move "Data item" link outside of sidebar toolbox, we want to move the Wikidata Item link from the toolbar into the 'In Other Projects' category of the sidebar.

In the case of some Special pages, e.g. Wikipedia Main Page, Wikipedia Bot Requests, there is already a link called 'Wikidata' in the Other Projects category, which we assume might be confusing to some users if they are unsure which wikidata link they need. See the example below of how it might look.

Discussion points:

• • We first worried that users would mistakenly select the 'Wikidata' link instead of the Wikidata item link but then realised that, for a user already on a Bot Request page, the equivalent bot request page for Wikidata may be more relevant than a wikidata item about the Wikipedia Bot Request page.
• We also assume that users visiting a Special Page like Bot Requests are fairly experienced editors, who may already know the difference between the two links and not be confused by having them side-by-side.
• For the majority of pages (which do not have 2 wikidata links), it does make more sense for the Wikidata Item to be in Other Projects. But for special pages, it represents something different and would be better to remain in the toolbox
• We discussed showing the item's Q number next to the wikidata item link to differentiate it, however this would be a fairly radical design change, and also could be too long for the context menu.
• We also discussed that clicks on 'Wikidata' links across all projects per day is much lower than clicks on 'Wikidata Item' links, however there are probably comparatively more clicks on Wikidata links for the amount of links there are.
• We also examined the naming of 'Wikidata Item' in the Other projects section for non-special pages. This section tends to name purely the project rather than 'item' as well, so this would become inconsistent in its new location.
• We discussed not making any differentiation changes for now, and awaiting feedback from test wikis or the wider community after deployment to determine our outcome.

The conclusions we came to as of 15.08.24:

1. Make no differentiation changes in V1 of the parent ticket
2. Seek advice from various wikis ( Basque, Russian, Ukrainian, Yakut, Lezgian, Tajik and Udmurt ) which have already moved their wikidata item links to the other projects section AND/OR the pilot wikis for the parent ticket after their deployment- is this a problem for them? Have they made any mitigating efforts?
3. Separate from the parent ticket, we could begin a community project to better determine the behaviour of the context menu for Special pages.
