As part of the MinT for Wiki Readers MVP (T359072), users were invited to learn more about the current article with machine translated contents from other languages. The access provided from the footer of Wikipedia articles (T363338) resulted in more requests to machine translation than the servers could handle, and was disabled after a few days.
Data shows a big spike of activity after the entry point was enabled on the initial set of 23 pilot wikis.
This ticket proposes to enable gradually one wiki at a time to identify the traffic patterns and estimate the needed capacity for the MinT service (T368418).
Before proceeding with enablements, we want to make sure that we complete key improvements to avoid the creation of unnecessary translation requests. In particular, make sure the following tickets are resolved before starting this one:
- T363308: Server-side caching for MinT
- T371226: Access from the footer of an article needs adjustment
