Feature suggestion: Places Launcher Shortcut
Closed, ResolvedPublicFeature

Description

Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where):
I would like to add a Launcher Shortcut for the "Places" feature, allowing users to open the map view directly from their home screen. This would make it faster and easier for users to explore nearby locations while traveling.

Use case(s) (list the steps that you performed to discover that problem, and describe the actual underlying problem which you want to solve. Do not describe only a solution):
When traveling or visiting new areas, users often want quick access to the "Places" feature to explore nearby landmarks, locations, or points of interest. Currently, users have to navigate through the app to access the map view. A launcher shortcut would solve this by allowing them to open the "Places" feature directly from their home screen with just one tap, providing a smoother and faster experience for frequent travelers.

Benefits (why should this be implemented?):
-Enhances user convenience by allowing quicker access to the "Places" feature.
-Improves the overall user experience for travelers or those exploring their surroundings.
-Saves time and effort by reducing the steps needed to open the map view.
-Encourages more engagement with the feature, especially among users who are constantly on the move.

Looks good on 2.7.50506-r-2024-10-08 (corrected build number)

Where is this launcher shortcut? I don't see a widget for places nor do I have a second shortcut for Places. Is this about some link to the Places map within the map and if so why then does the Feature summary say "directly from their home screen" which I think refers to the Android home screen?

A related problem is that when one had a tab/article open before closing the Wikipedia app when opening the app it will show that article instead of the Home explore feed so there's no button for the Places map and one first has to navigate away from the last seen article (a privacy issue btw) by tapping on the three dots in the top right and of the many options select the explore feed and then press another button and select Places.
